UGLY IS MORE
[ABSTRACT]
This design research project investigates the emerging New Ugly aesthetic and its semiotic potential in communication design. Characterised by clashing colours, distorted fonts, and chaotic layouts that evoke clumsiness or imperfection, New Ugly challenges conventional design norms. Through experimental critical design projects, it explores the application of 'ugliness' in various critical and speculative contexts. By defying design homogeneity, New Ugly pushes the boundaries of traditional disciplines, demonstrating that its countercultural aesthetic goes beyond visual chaos to offer deeper insights into communication and expression. Emotional subversion, clumsy methods, and participatory branding practice were tested, analysed and concluded throughout the iterative experiments.
